EMT Refreshers

Effective July 1, 2013, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Office of EMS will be following the National EMS Agenda for the Future, and will require all Massachusetts certified EMTs, at all levels, to follow the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Continued Competency Program for recertification. We have provided for a transitional year in order to accomplish this important national transition.

These recertification training requirements replace the refresher and continuing education credit requirements the NREMT had, as well as what Massachusetts currently requires, we will allow time for transition. At this time, only Massachusetts and North Dakota providers are authorized to use the NREMT Continued Competency Program for recertification. During the transition recertification cycle, EMTs at all levels with expiration dates of 4/1/2014 can select to meet the Massachusetts continuing education and refresher requirements OR meet the new NREMT Continued Competency Program recertification requirements, as described below.

The NREMT Continued Competency Program divides the training hours’ requirements into three categories, National, Local and Individual. This model for continuing education does not require a refresher training course and therefore requires fewer overall training hours because of the improved focus of education.
